Dr Naresh Trehan is an eminent cardiovascular and cardiothoracic surgeon from India with over five decades of experience in the field of cardiovascular surgery.
Dr. Trehan has won several prestigious awards, including the honoured Dr. B. C. Roy Award from Medical Council of India, as well as the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards from Government of India for distinguished service in medicine. He has also served as personal surgeon to the first citizen of India, that is the President of India, since 1991. Dr Naresh Trehan is now the chairman and managing director of Medanta -The Medicity in Gurgaon and its chief cardiac surgeon.
Born 12 August 1946, Dr Naresh Trehan started his medical education in King George’s Medical College in Lucknow from 1963. He moved to the USA in November, 1969 and became a resident student at the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. After that, Dr Naresh Trehan went to practise at New York University Medical Center in Manhattan, USA, from 1971 to 1988.
Dr. Trehan returned to India and founded the Escorts Heart Institute and Research Center (EHIRC) in Delhi in 1988. Over the decades, he gathered immense expertise and specialised skills in cardiothoracic surgery, cardiovascular surgery, minimally invasive cardiac surgery and heart transplant that have made him famous not only in India but worldwide too in the field of medicine.
He holds various honourable memberships and certifications that hold testimony to his rich and wide expertise in his field.
Dr Naresh Trehan has served as the president of the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery. Currently, he is Member of this organisation’s Board of Directors. He is also member of several other important global medicine bodies some of which are the Scientific Council of the American College of Angiology and Society of Thoracic Surgeons of U.S.A., Association of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons of Asia and the European Association for Cardio-thoracic Surgery.
In India, Dr. Trehan is associated with various government affiliated bodies related to healthcare and medicine including the Key Advisory Group of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India and Confederation of Indian Industries-Healthcare Industry Committee. He is the Founder Chairman of Medanta – The Medicity, which is one of the largest multi-specialty hospitals in India right now.
Established in 2009, the concept of Medanta healthcare facility stemmed from Dr Naresh Trehan’s desire to build an advanced healthcare facility in India as he felt that the country needed and deserved to have its own institution to provide the best of treatment across the world in diseases ailing people. Designed by the collaboration of Canadian and Indian architects, the Medanta Medicity building was made with the intention to create the safest and the most efficient environment for treatment of patients.
In pursuance of Dr. Trehan’s vision, Medanta synchronises the best in modern, technologically advanced international methods in healthcare with the treasure of ancient Indian medical wisdom reflected in Ayurveda, and Yoga, in order to provide the most effective and affordable treatment to patients. In its neurosciences department for example, Medanta has the best and updated medical technology, a full high powered MRI machine inside the operating room to give a live picture of the status of a tumour inside the brain while the doctor is working on its removal. This kind of treatment is followed by a holistic recovery process with the aid of Ayurveda and Yoga.
The idea is, as Dr Naresh Trehan keeps emphasising, is not just to live longer but live better and to be able to value and cherish life. While his project has been largely successful, the eminent doctor insists that this is an ongoing project.
